Long neglected and subject to stigmatization, this walk will explore how neighbourhood engagement can lead to positive change and urban renewal.

East of Adelaide (EOA), long thought of as the natural home of the street-level sex and drug trade, and in decline for much of the past generation is now witnessing a remarkable renaissance. This walk will chronicle the natural ebb and flow of inner-city vitality, the role of local politics in both neighbourhood decline and revitalization, and how urban revitalization can only occur with the mobilization of local residents to provide an authentic and place-centred vision for the future.

We will explore voth the residential neighbourhood and its commercial corridor, examine the relationship of each to the other, see the importance of heritage preservation as a tool of social and economic change, and discuss the potential challenges to long-term residents of urban gentrification.

Let us not forget that the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, London Region branch led a walk years ago, fall of ‘85 as we recall it, culminating in a visit to the old Town Hall aka Aeolian Hall, with founder Gordon Jeffrey as honoured guest – a rare public appearance.
And that the centenary of London East’s amalgamation with the City Proper was celebrated by a diverse group of enthusiasts mainly from the other side of the tracks 25 years ago, complete with Mayoral Proclamation. (Orlo Miller took off with the document, but snapshots were deposited at LPL
This is your 125th anniverayof that historic event, celebrated at the London Club with song and mirth. Also of interest is the 125th anniversary of the Ontario municipal vote being extended to “the fair sex”. Check with the London Room clippings file for a Les Bronson LOWO Jan 2, 1985 recapping strange doings in London East a century earlier, and a reference to the referendum on the waterworks issue. No, not all have viewed your area as ‘EOA’ as a putdown, just a reference to the old town line. Great work you are doing – hope you get a good turnout of local heritage explorers.
